IGF-1 DES (also referred to as des(1-3)IGF-I in scientific literature) is a shortened variant of the naturally occurring IGF-1. The 70 amino acid form of activated IGF-1 is crucial for typical human growth and development, functioning through IGF-1 receptors to produce an anabolic effect that aids in muscle building, which makes IGF-1 significant in bodybuilding.

Low levels of IGF-1 are associated with inadequate growth and various metabolic issues. Numerous tissues within the body generate IGF-1, and where it is synthesized influences its role. The primary source of IGF-1 is the liver, from where it is released into the bloodstream to act as an endocrine hormone in other tissues.

Significantly, IGF-1 serves as a key growth hormone that regulates the anabolic effects of growth hormone. Additionally, it possesses an independent growth-promoting effect that is enhanced when used together with growth hormone. IGF-1 DES has been specifically designed to exclude three amino acids from the end of natural IGF-1, increasing its potency approximately ten-fold compared to standard IGF-1. This enhanced potency arises because IGF-1 DES does not interact with IGF-binding proteins, while IGF-1 typically does. These binding proteins usually inhibit the growth-promoting functions of IGF-1 but cannot attach to IGF-1 DES, allowing the peptide to effectively encourage growth and repair in muscles and bones, as well as support the survival of smooth muscle.

Research indicates that IGF-1 DES can stimulate growth in various tissues, as demonstrated by numerous animal studies. These studies also showed that while muscle mass increased, carcass fat reduced. In diabetic subjects, the modified peptide positively affected the entire digestive system, enhancing nutrient absorption. Although there have been no human clinical trials involving IGF-1 DES, findings suggest that the peptide naturally exists in the human brain, and research on brain cells indicates it has protective qualities against brain injury and fosters brain growth.

IGF-1 DES has a brief half-life, being degraded within five minutes of administration in humans. Due to this short duration, a dose of 1 mg of IGF-1 DES should be administered intramuscularly, with up to 100 mcg being allowable per day, divided between either two or four muscles before workouts. A typical IGF-1 cycle lasts four weeks and is best combined with an anabolic androgenic steroid for optimal outcomes.

Potential side effects of IGF-1 DES include headaches and nausea, as the peptide may induce a hypoglycemic state. Elevated levels of this hormone can also lead to organ enlargement, so it is essential not to exceed the advised dose of 100 mcg per day.
